I recently switched from jumping with my left thumb to jumping with my right middle finger. My reason was that I thought it would improve my strafe jumping, since I can jump at the right moment.

I very soon noticed that I jump whenever I try to switch to rocket launcher, but I got over that soon. A very nice surprise was that very soon after the switch, I noticed my rocket jumps improved a lot! A good explanation IMO is that it's easier to press at the same time 2 fingers of the same hand than 2 fingers of different hands. Simple thing one can do, awesome effect. I recommend you to try it.

Hopefully my strafe jumping will improve also, but this depends on my time spent on defrag.
